This consultancy is
a result of observing many failures of new retail businesses, particularly
supermarkets,
at close quaters. The main reason for failure is insufficient knowledge
and experience to manage supermarkets
in the R500,000 to R2,000,000 per month category. This size
of operation does not allow the luxury of middle management. The operator
of a business in this turnover segment has to have an all round knowledge
of the business and also have hands on ability, whilst maintaining control.
Most of the operators become
overly busy and resort to their particular area of comfort.
Very few operators in this segment
monitor basic ratios on a regular basis. Franchisors or Buying Groups
able to offer this practical assistance in this area, are in the minority
and even when this might occur
are usually received with scepticism by the operator.
